Isolated area with only a jeep trail access from private land out of TRUE or across Bluestone River from Little Bluestone access. The area surrounding this obs. point is managed by the National Parks System. Above the point 20m it is dominated by Tsuga canadensis - Quercus prinus and it looks slightly drier but similar to this. Across the river is Platanus occidentalis - Betula nigra cobblebar and Quercus velutina - Fraxinus pennsylvanica floodplain, both already sampled. Upstream river-right is a flat alluvial area with Sycamore / Urtica dioica / Verbesina alternifolia. This area will be further investigated later this week. There is a stand of very large Quercus prinus uphill from the point with dbh's of > 80 cm. Jim and I returned in See plot BLUE.;The community runs in a thin 50m wide band from the river's edge. It is somewhat rich and dominated by Tsuga canadensis - Quercus rubra - Tilia americana / Dryopteris marginalis. This is a steep slope with lots of exposed shale areas and places where there were micro-landslides. Individual; trees have given away and have fallen over. I get the feeling that the area might be several communities jammed in tight together due to steepness.
Representativeness
Medium size patch of rich hemlock community. This differs from the others sampled by being steeper and closer to the river.
